The Learning To Ring curriculum -- for both handbells and handchimes -- remains the best sequential teaching method in the handbell world. It is based on the premise that ringing skills should be taught in conjunction with good rhythmic skills -- and it provides any director or teacher with the knowledge, insight, and tools necessary to develop these skills in new ringers (for readers and non-readers alike!).
The Director's Manual and Using Handchimes offer excellent starting points, with basic instruction and organization carefully taught. Eleven sequential, easy-to-follow lesson plans are designed to teach basic ringing and music reading techniques. Each lesson features teaching tips, helpful hints, rhythmic drills, and instructional diagrams.
Both publications include history, notation, basic equipment needs, ringing assignments, scoring, special effects, etc. but also move into beyond-the- basics for both instruments. Independently the Director's Manual offers a section on special effects, malleting, multiple bell techniques, and word rhythms. Using Handchimes addresses chimes in the classroom, offering creative ideas for ringing. Its last section concludes with an overview of music therapy as it deals with various emotional, mental and physical impairments.
The music in the Learning To Ring curriculum -- Standard Hymns, Favorite Hymns, and All-Time Favorites -- carefully follows the sequence of lessons found within both directing manuals. Each collection, arranged for two- or three-octaves, offers performable and interesting music for each and every skill being taught. Every ringer is involved -- no one is left waiting for "their one note" in any song!
And finally, Rhythm Skills for Ringers is a compilation of the rhythmic drills outlined in both teaching manuals. It can also stand alone as a warm-up exercise book for any choir.
